New species of custard apple family found in MyanmarDuring an expedition to Yinmabin District, Sagaing Region, Myanmar in July 2020, researchers from Monya University of Myanmar and Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG) collected an Artabotrys specimen with broad, ovate outer petals. After a thorough examination of its morphology and comparison with protologues and actual and digitized type specimens from across Myanmar and neighboring countries, the researchers discovered that this specimen does not match any known Artabotrys species and confirmed it new to science.Jan 26, 2021

Most effective pollinator of Hoya pottsii revealedIn a study published in Flora, researchers from Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG) we investigated the pollinators of H. pottsii (spontaneous and epiphytic, growing on several cultivated and subspontaneous trees in the garden) by capturing flower visitors during the evening and night.Jan 19, 2021

Insect herbivores drive evolution of defensive syndromes in fig plantsIn a study published in Ecological Monographs, researchers from Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG) combine comparative phylogenetics, detailed plant trait data, insect herbivore data and field observations to investigate the macroevolution of leaf defenses and resistance to herbivory in fig plants (Ficus) in a common-garden setting. The study focused on leaf defenses and susceptibility of figs to naturally occurring herbivores.Sep 08, 2020

Functional traits characterize tradeoffs in seedling growth in subtropical forestIn a study published in Journal of Ecology, researchers from Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG) designed experiment to quantify the growth responses of seedlings in a monsoonal subtropical forest to varying abiotic and biotic conditions in space and time. They wanted to determine whether fundamental tradeoffs relating to growth can be detected and if functional traits can predict where species fall along these tradeoff axes.Sep 03, 2020

Hengduan mountain alpine flora history shown to be longest on EarthIn a latest study published in Science on July 31, the researchers from Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences showed that the alpine flora of the Hengduan Mountains has continuously existed far longer than any other flora on Earth, and they illustrated how modern biotas have been shaped by past geological and climatic events.Jul 31, 2020
