The annual academic meeting 2025 and 8th youth science &technology forum of the Ecological Society of Yunnan was held at Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG) from November 7-9. With the theme “Constructing the ecological security barrier in Southwest China and biodiversity conservation”, the event brought together over 270 scholars from more than 40 institutions across China.

Prof. Yang Yongping, chairman of the society, delivered a welcome speech. He emphasized the critical importance of ecological security in Southwest China and encouraged young scholars to make breakthroughs in areas such as biodiversity monitoring and ecosystem restoration.

Prof. Xing Yaowu, director of XTBG, encouraged young scholars to focus on frontier areas including biodiversity conservation and sustainable utilization, cross-border ecological security cooperation, and intelligent ecological monitoring to address national strategic needs.

The keynote presentations were made by Prof. Wang Shaopeng from Peking University, Prof. Zhao Jianli from Yunnan University, Prof. Cao Min and Prof. Zhang Yongjiang of XTBG, and Li Hongwei of Kunming Institute of Botany (KIB). Their reports covered diverse topics such as “biodiversity and ecosystem stability: theoretical expansions and experimental verification”, “origin, evolution, and genetic basis of Heterodichogamy in angiosperms”, “the Dipterocarp forests”, “ stability of biological systems under environmental change”, “ review and outlook on Wu Hengyi’s thoughts on ecological stations”.

The meeting featured 14 specialized symposia and 57 presentations in the Youth Science & Technology Forum, covering such topics as evolutionary ecology, community ecology, pollution ecology, landscape ecology, and global change biology. Participants explored forefront scientific questions ranging from the mechanisms of biodiversity formation to ecosystem structure and function, and the responses of ecosystems to global change.

At the closing ceremony, 25 outstanding presentations from the 8th Youth Science & Technology Forum were honored, with 6 receiving first prize and 19 receiving second prize.

It’s said that this meeting is the largest academic gathering organized by the  Ecological Society of Yunnan in recent years.
