Prof. Xing Yaowu, director of Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG), conducted a five-day visit to Laos from march 26-30. The visit was aimed to deepen scientific and educational collaboration with Lao partners. On the morning of March 27, Prof. Xing and his team visited Dr. Chanhthakhone Boualaphanh, Lao vice minister of Agriculture and Forestry, to discuss advancing joint initiatives in biodiversity conservation and sustainable development. Afterwards, XTBG and the Biotechnology and Ecology Institute (BEI) of Lao PDR signed a supplementary cooperation agreement. The updated agreement expands the geographic scope of collaborative research from northern Laos to the entire country and introduces three new priority areas: climate change response, ecosystem restoration, and sustainable agricultural development. This expansion not only addresses Laos' pressing ecological conservation needs but also marks a concrete step toward implementing the China-Laos Community with a Shared Future Action Plan. XTBG delegation also visited the herbarium at the National University of Laos, a key institution for documenting the country’s plant diversity. The curator proposed joint efforts with XTBG to systematically catalog and study Laos’ rich plant biodiversity. The visit reinforced Sino-Laotian ties in scientific research and ecological protection.
