Yunnan Provincial Key Laboratory of Forest Ecosystem Stability and Global Change Response was officially accredited at the 2025 Yunnan Province Science and Technology work conference. Prof. Xing Yaowu, director of Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG), accepted the accreditation.
The key laboratory was officially approved for construction by the Yunnan Provincial Department of Science and Technology on September 14, 2024, with a cultivation period of 2 years (January 1, 2025 - December 31, 2026).
The laboratory is based in Yunnan, targeting the Southeast Asian region. It primarily studies typical forest ecosystems in Yunnan Province, such as tropical rainforests, dry-hot valley savanas, subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forests, and subalpine coniferous forests.
Relying on national field stations, an extensively established forest plot network, canopy tower cranes, carbon-water flux iron towers, and large-scale precipitation isolation experiments, the laboratory focuses on the stability of forest ecosystems and their complex interactions with global change. Special attention is given to changes in forest ecosystem structure and function and their response mechanisms under extreme climate events.
The key lab aims to build a globally leading scientific research platform, gather interdisciplinary scientific talents, cultivate and create internationally influential research teams. It will provide key technological support for formulating biodiversity conservation strategies, addressing global change challenges, achieving "carbon neutrality" goals, and offer theoretical support for implementing important ecosystem protection and restoration.
It is said that 7 provincial key laboratories and provincial technology innovation centers were awarded licenses this time.
