To mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the French National Center for Scientific Research established the Sino-French International Research Network on Biodiversity in Beijing in June.

The research network was founded by research teams at CAS and the French National Centre for Scientific Research and is dedicated to jointly responding to global concerns such as biodiversity loss, animal disease epidemics and ecosystem dysfunction.

Experts from the two sides jointly unveiled the research network during a symposium at the Institute of Zoology of CAS.

Prof. Chen Jin of Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG) attended the unveiling ceremony and symposium.

XTBG researchers (Chen Jin, Zhang Ling and Peng Yanqiong) presented their research progress at the symposium, with titles of “To What Extent Can Conservation Education Contribute to Biodiversity Conservation?, “The Associational Effects of Host Plant and Mistletoe Functional Traits on Leaf Herbivory in Mistletoe”, “Co-Diversification of Fig Wasps and Ficus Hosts”respectively.

The Sino-French International Research Network on Biodiversity is led by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), with both China and France establishing two centers each, north and south. The Chinese side relies on the Institute of Zoology, CAS (Northern Center) and the Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (Southern Center), while the French side relies on the Hubert Curien Multidisciplinary Institute of Strasbourg University (Northern Center) and the Center for Functional and Evolutionary Ecology of Montpellier University (Southern Center).

Currently, 15 pairs of experts with similar research directions have been selected from CAS and CNRS to form core joint research teams based on the Co-partner cooperation model, and 5 pairs of experts from other research institutions or universities have been invited to form an open international cooperation team. This research network is committed to jointly addressing global issues such as biodiversity loss, ecosystem dysfunction, and epidemic animal diseases under global change, carrying out joint scientific research, academic exchanges, and training of young talents.
