The 54th Meeting of the ICIMOD (International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development) Board of Governors was held in Dhaka, Bangladesh from May 20 to 25, 2023. The meeting held on May 21 night was presided over by ICIMOD Board of Governors Chairperson and Secretary of the Ministry of Hill Chittagong Affairs Mosammat Hamida Begum.
XTBG director Yang Yongping, who’s also deputy secretary general of CNICIMOD (Chinese Committee on ICIMOD), attended the meeting. He made the China Country Report 2022 at the meeting and reviewed the work process and achievement of ICIMOD in China.
The 54th ICIMOD meeting discussed and passed Strategy 2030 to address rapid climate change, biodiversity loss, increased disaster risk, and rising poverty and inequality. The participants also discussed and passed MTAP V,2023-2026, Draft Annual Plan and Budget 2024, Audit Report 2022, etc.
ICIMOD, which has been running for four decades, is headquartered in Kathmandu. 8 countries of Hindu Kush Himalaya region (HKH) namely Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Bhutan, Nepal, Bangladesh, China and Myanmar are members of ICIMOD. However, ICIMOD is associated with ICIMOD support group which consists of donor countries. Besides, there are Program Advisory Committee and research institutes of different countries of the world.
The main work of ICIMOD is to preserve the mountain environment and environment and to improve the quality of life of the mountain people. Besides, ICIMOD advises on mountain watershed management, disaster risk reduction, tackling environmental problems through natural means, capacity building and skill development.
The People’s Republic of China is a founding member of ICIMOD, along with seven other member states. China has been a member of ICIMOD since its inception and has been helping to meet its major objectives of poverty alleviation and environmental conservation in Hindu Kush Himalayas. China contributes core support to ICIMOD and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) is the designated nodal agency.
