When Art Meets Science, the Chinese Painting Exhibition of Rainforest, held at Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG) from September 28, 2016 came to an end on February 10. At the exhibition, 128 ink paintings and 10 woodcuts were on show to provide novel perspectives to visitors wanting to learn about nature and scientists trying to understand art. After polling by artists, staff members, and students, 40 paintings got strong support and will be collected permanently by XTBG.
The exhibition received 9409 visitors, including some high officials and renowned scientists.
According to Prof. Chen Jin, director of XTBG, the exhibition is a tribute to the diverse beauty of Xishuangbanna’s rain forests.
"Generations of painters have come here to sketch over several decades. Some have even visited 26 times. It has become a unique cultural phenomenon in Yunnan."
The exhibition provided a platform for both painters and scientists to a cross-disciplinary exchange.
“The exhibition will become a biennial event of XTBG” said Chen Jin at the summary meeting.
Chen Jin conferred certificates to the artists and thanked for their contribution.
