Prof. Lu Yongxiang, former vice-chairman of the standing committee of the National People's Congress and former president of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), paid an inspection tour to Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG) on October 2.
“It’s beyond my expectation”. The former CAS president made the remarks when learning XTBG achievements in regional biodiversity conservation, tropical ecological studies, environment-friendly rubber plantations, development of oil plants, etc. for the past five years.
During his visit, Lu Yongxiang firstly listened to the introduction made by Prof. Chen Jin, director of XTBG to the major progress recently achieved in scientific research, public education, species, conservation, Chinese Union of Botanic Gardens (CUBG), Southeast Asia Biodiversity Research Institute, etc. He was then briefed development goals and reform strategies of XTBG in the 13th five-year plan.
Lu Yongxiang was delighted at XTBG achievements, saying that XTBG spirit is most impressive. He expressed his confidence in the sustainable and coherent development of XTBG, just like the lush tropical rainforests.
The former CAS president laid emphasis on the sustainable development and urged XTBG to take into consideration of the use of big data while picturing a clear blueprint for the future development.
After the meeting, Lu Yongxiang visited the Flower Garden, Vine Garden, demonstration shop of Inca peanut (Plukenetia volubilis) products, and the central laboratory.He also looked around the Science & Art Collaboration: the Chinese Painting Exhibition of Rainforest.
