The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) has agreed to construct a biodiversity research center in Myanmar, in cooperation with Myanmar University of Forestry, and Institute of Forestry. Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG), Kunming Institute of Botany (KIB), and Kunming Institute of Zoology (KIZ) are major implementing institutions for the preparation work.
According to the general plan, the CAS Biodiversity Research Center is expected to integrate scientists concerning studies in Southeast Asian countries, and construct an integrative network platform for CAS scientists in biology, resources, environment, and human health. It aims to promote and develop links with the public, private sector, civil society, international development institutions, and other community for the use of biodiversity.
On September 25, a coordination meeting was held in Kunming in order to actively promote the construction of the biodiversity research center. Leaders of XTBG, KIB, and KIZ discussed work plan and promotion measures. An expert panel discussion for the construction scheme is planned in October. A workshop on biodiversity conservation and management is to be held in Nay Pyi Taw, Mayanmar in March, 2015.
XTBG has done many preparations for the biodiversity research center, such as signing MoU with Myanmar Ministry of Environmental Conservation and Forestry (MoECAF), having project implementation meeting with officials from MoECAF , setting working group, etc.
