The Advanced Field Course in Ecology and Conservation - Xishuangbanna (AFEC-X) comes to its 17th year. On October 29, the AFEC-X 2025 opened at the headquarters of Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG). The course has attracted 166 applications from early-career researchers across 65 scientific institutions in 25 countries. Following a rigorous selection process involving document review and interviews, 27 exceptional participants from 19 countries were ultimately selected to attend. Prof. Xing Yaowu, director of XTBG, delivered a welcome speech. He encouraged the trainees to embrace new knowledge, enhance teamwork, and proactively tackle challenges throughout the intensive six-week program. He expressed his hope that the trainees would become future leaders in advancing ecological research and global biodiversity conservation efforts. Prof. Chen Jin, head teacher of AFEC-X 2025, provided a detailed introduction to the course's history, curriculum, and the distinguished faculty. The Advanced Field Course in Ecology and Conservation Biology is a flagship international academic exchange and talent development program hosted by XTBG and is recognized as a premium training program within the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Having been successfully held for 16 consecutive years, the course has established itself as a key platform for nurturing young scientists in the field. The six-week program is designed to systematically enhance participants' professional competencies and scientific confidence. It integrates a diverse range of formats, including theoretical lectures, field practicums, independent research projects, and academic seminars. The course is dedicated to fostering the next generation of leaders in ecology and conservation by building robust regional collaboration networks and strengthening the participants' research capabilities.
