Prof. Chen Jin receives Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh Medal----Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden,CAS

Prof. CHEN Jin of Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences was awarded the prestigious Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE) Medal on November 23 for his great contribution to biodiversity conservation over 30 years.

In her speech at the awarding ceremony, Ms. Caroline Wilson showed high recognition to CHEN Jin’s exceptional abilities as a researcher and an inspirational leader. As a researcher, he is a leading scientist on biodiversity conservation and environmental education, and has made great progress and published papers of high impact concerning tropical ecology and plant-animal interactions. Serving as director of XTBG over 15 years, he has led the institute to carry out a series of research programs, enabled the garden one of the leading botanical gardens in the world.

CHEN got his Bachelor degree from Nanjing Agriculture University and Ph.D degree from Kunming Institute of Botany (KIB). He has worked in XTBG for more than 30 years and served as its director from 2015 to 2021. He has been engaging in research mainly on wild fruit reintroduction, plant-animal interactions, biodiversity conservation, and environmental education.

To date, he has published more than 100 papers in SCI journals including Cell, Nature Communications, Current Biology, and won a series of academic awards.

The medal awarding happened at the meeting of the Edinburgh Declaration and biodiversity, part of activity concerning the second phase of the UN Convention on Biodiversity – COP15. Ms. Catriona Radcliffe, head of Beijing office of Scottiish Government, chaired the ceremony.

The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh Medal, awarded in recognition of an outstanding individual’s contribution in any field related to the work of the RBGE, was first presented in August 2010 to Dr. Edward Edmund Kemp, a former RBGE Curator and Scotland’s Senior Horticulturist.

Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE) is a leading international research organization delivering knowledge, education and plant conservation action around the world.

This is the first time this Medal was ever conffered to a Chinese researcher. Ms. Caroline Wilson, the British Ambassador to China, presented the medal online to CHEN.
