The 6-day Spatial Analysis Workshop 2016 of Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG) came to a successful end on July 23. The workshop was aimed to teach participants how to use GIS software and understand how to develop analyses which best utilize spatial approaches. Dr. Alice Hughes was major instructor of the workshop. 10 participants from research institutes and universities accomplished all training and got certificates.

The workshop covered such topics as ArcGis and QGIS, Basic GIS, GPS and GIS, experimental design, projections, datum and coordinate systems, remote sensing, creating data layers, changing resolutions, finding data, standardisation and quality, databasing, species distribution modelling, understanding environmental change, spatial statistics.

The participants went through various GIS techniques and learned how they can stimulate the environment at an ecologically relevant and adaptable spatial-temporal scale for any given study. The workshop presented spatial analytical tools and demonstrated their applications, providing essential concepts and methods of spatial analysis.

The 10 students built their own spatial ecological study, using their own data and with the support and guidance to develop a rigorous approach to understanding their data from a novel perspective. After accomplishing the study, they got certificates from XTBG.
