The 60th anniversary of Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG) falls on January 1, 2019. A series of activities concerning the 60th anniversary celebration will be held, including the Annual Meeting of the CAS Southeast Asia Biodiversity Research Institute (CAS-SEABRI), 60th anniversary gathering, inauguration of environmental education center, 4th Xishuangbanna International Symposium, council meeting of the Chinese Union of Botanical Gardens (CUBG), launching ceremony of CAS “featured institute”, and international consultation of XTBG.

60 years ago, Prof. Cai Xitao headed up a batch of hot-blooded youngsters into the gourd-shaped peninsula in XIshuangbanna under dense tropical forest. They unfolded a magnificent history of creating XTBG. Generations of XTBG people remain committed to their mission and continue to forge ahead. The remote small island has become one of China’s most important bases of strategic plant resources, a National Popular Science Education Base, a National 5A Tourist Attraction (i.e. the nation’s highest level for scenic attraction), and a world-renowned botanical garden.

Over the past 60 years, XTBG has experienced hardships and made tremendous progress as well. It has overcome many challenges and been working hard to turn the gourd-shaped peninsula into a renowned botanical garden.

With rich plant species, first-class research facilities, favorable work and living environment, XTBG has become an ideal place for scientist and students from around the world. The wasteland has been turned into a science island of international influence.

“We live together in the garden, with flowers as our family members. We are connected to the mountains and rivers too. Our garden, our home, we build it together.” As XTBG song says, this gourd-shaped peninsula is united hard work and dream of generations of XTBG staffs.

Building XTBG into a science island of international influence is a journey to which there is no end. A better and more beautiful garden is waiting for unremitting efforts.
