A new Chinese bird record of Zebra Ground-dove (Geopelia striata) was observed and photographed in Xishuangbanan by a bird lover of Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG) on January 17.

Dr. ZHAO Jiangbo of XTBG first spotted the long tail zebra dove, brownish-grey in color with black and white barring in 2021 and confirmed its identity as a new bird record of China by consulting a large amount of literature.

According to literature, the long tail zebra dove “Geopelia striata” belongs to the dove family, Columbidae, native to Southeast Asia. It is also known as the Zebra Ground-dove and the Barred Dove. It gets its name from its Zebra-like striations on its neck and breast.

Zebra ground-dove (Geopelia striata) is the fourth Chinese new bird record found in Xishuangbanna Troopical Botanical Garden (XTBG). The other three new Chinese bird records are Brown-throated sunbird (Anthreptes malacensis), Pin-tailed parrotfinch (Erythrura prasina) and Yellow-vented bulbul (Pycnonotus goiavier).
