The theme of the International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) on 22 May 2016 is “Mainstreaming Biodiversity; Sustaining People and their Livelihoods”. Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG) organized a series of activities on this day to raise public awareness of biodiversity conservation.
Like the past years on May 22, lucky tourists were shown around the beautiful botanical garden by experts and volunteer tour guides. While enjoying wonderful scenery, they also listened to stories behind plants like dancing grass, miracle fruit, strangler figs, etc. The Science Festival also feasted the eyes of visitors, learning stories behind scientific research and ongoing programs undertaken by XTBG. The visitors had a better understanding on biodiversity conservation.
Some primary school students were invited to experience science festival on May 23. They compared plants in living collections of XTBG with those in their schools and made nature journaling, just like little botanists.
XTBG regards raising public environmental awareness as one of its tasks and has been making numerous efforts to increase the understanding of the important role of biodiversity in our future. The celebration of International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) is part of it.
