Bird collision caused by transparent and reflective characteristics of glass are quite common all over the world. In XTBG, birds were occasionally found dead near the buildings with big windows for collision. To eliminate this problem one must make glass visible to birds.
In addition to taking actions to protect birds from colliding windows, such as affixing black hawk-shaped silhouettes to windows, education department of XTBG also designed a special activity to improve the public's awareness and remind people what kinds of man-made threats making a migratory bird fail during the journey.
A big turntable is divided into eight parts meaning different threats which a bird might face during the migration, such as pesticide, window collision, random cat, poaching and electric wire collision.
The player will have a dart as a bird. The player is asked to throw the dart to the turntable. When a dart meets any threat, the player is allowed to pick a piece of paper for a box. He or she will have two fates. If he gets lucky, the bird might be saved for some reasons, for example, it is rescued by people or conservation actions. Another is that the bird died unfortunately. The game will fail. The failed player is asked to cut a hawk-shaped silhouette to save the bird. If the player finishes the cutting, which means the bird gets the second life, he or she can play the game again.
Education department used the game in a summer camp this year and it was quite welcomed by kids and adults. Players not only learned the knowledge of bird collision, but also took real actions to prevent it from happening.
Most importantly, the game was FUN!
