This lecture is about the emerging economy, environmental disaster, US competitor, the next global superpower–many Americans are wondering what Chinas’ rise really means for the US and for global sustainability. With photographs of wild mountains and rivers to some of the densest urban areas in the world gathered from his extensive experience doing research and living in China, Dr. Ed Grumbine will offer a global perspective on Chinas’ importance spotlighting 21st century trends that every American needs to know.
Bio: Dr. R. Edward Grumbine has worked on bringing conservation science into resource management planning and policy since the late 1980s. Currently on leave from Prescott College, he holds the position of senior international scientist at the Kunming Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Yunnan Province. Present projects include work on dam development impacts in the Mekong River, hydropower issues in the India Himalaya, and defining environmental security on China’s western borders. Dr. Grumbine is the author of numerous academic papers and two books on biodiversity protection and policy. His latest book, Where the Dragon Meets the Angry River: Nature and Power in the Peoples Republic of China (Island Press, 2010), surveys conservation issues in China.
