About this event 

Please join us for the launch event of the journal Integrative Conservation, from 16:30-18:10 on Tuesday, 20 December 2022 (Beijing time). The event will be hybried, with an in-person component hosted in Xishuangbanna tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and a zoom option open to all interested participants. Prof. Harald Schneider, XTBG, CAS, will host the event, and all are welcome. 

In Session 1 (16:30-17:00), the Editor-in-Chief Prof. YANG Yongping, Director of XTBG, will introduce the journal and its mission. Prof. MA Keping, Professor at Institute of Botany, CAS and Editor-in-Chief of Biodiversity Science, will give a speech, followed by the congratulations speech by WU Young, Editorial Director of Wiley.  

In Session 2 (17:10-18:10), the Editor-in-Chief Ahimsa Campos-Arceiz, Professor at XTBG, will talk about the progress of Integrative Conservation and the challenges it is facing. Prof. XU Jianchu, Professor of Kunming Institute of Botany, CAS, Editorial Board member of the journal, will give a presentation on interconnections of all life and things. Prof. Priya Davidar, Professor (Retired) at Pondicherry University and Editorial Board member of the journal, will give a talk on ‘addressing continental scale population connectivity for megafauna: the case of the Asian elephant’.  

About the Journal 

Integrative Conservation, the official journal of XTBG in collaboration with Wiley, is an open access, interdisciplinary journal encompassing a wide range of perspectives and scholarly disciplines relevant for our understanding and conservation of biodiversity.  

The journal covers a wide range of conservation science sub-disciplines, including organismal, population, community, and landscape ecology, evolution, systematics, biodiversity, behavior, botany, zoology, conservation physiology, conservation planning, policy, and different aspects of social sciences, as long as there is a direct relevance for biodiversity conservation. The journal publishes papers from all kinds of taxa, biomes, and geographical regions, although with certain bias towards Asian and tropical systems.  

We have began to publish papers online. The first issue will be online by end of December 2022. No costs for publishing until 2025.

About the Speakers 

Yongping Yang, Director of Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden, CAS; Editor-in-Chief of Integrative Conservation. His major research interests are plant phylogenetics, pollination ecology and molecular biology. In recent years, he focused on plant adaptive evolution by applying comparative genomics and population genetics approach.  

Ahimsa Campos-Arceiz, Professor and Principal investigator at Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden, CAS; Editor-in-Chief of Integrative Conservation. His main research interests and expertise are the ecology and conservation of Asian megafauna, especially elephants, human-wildlife conflicts, plant-animal interactions, conservation policy and governance, and local capacity building in science and conservation. He is a former President of the Association for Tropical Biology and Conservation (ATBC) and the Asian Section of the Society for Conservation Biology (SCB-Asia). 

Young Wu, Director, Life and Social Sciences & Portfolio Development, Wiley. Young Wu is responsible for managing and developing life and social science journals, supporting Open Research initiatives in China, and building up the Content Acquisition program in Wiley. Young has worked in academic publishing for more than 10 years across different STMJ departments with various positions, including journal management, editorial development and engagement, open research, content acquisition along with launching new journals etc. Additionally, she was involved in training initiatives abroad, such as Research without Borders program in Africa to support a biomedical journal. She published several articles in the journals including The Lancet Global Health. 

Keping Ma, Professor at Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences; Editorial Board member of Integrative Conservation; Editor-in-chief of Biodiversity Science, Honorary Editor-in-chief of Guihaia, Associate Editor-in-Chief of Chinese Journal of Ecology, Associate Editor-in-Chief for Forest Resources Management, Editor of BMC Ecology, Journal of Plant Ecology, Plant Ecology and Diversity and Forest Ecosystems. In 1997, selected for ‘Hundred Talents Program’ of the CAS. General Secretary of CNC-DIVERSITAS, Vice Chair and Secretary-General of Biodiversity Committee of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, President for IUCN Asia Regional Members Committee, a member of Board of Directors for Species 2000, a member of Executive Committee for DIWPA, AP-BON and ESABII, President of Ecological Society of Beijing. He focuses on the development of Biodiversity Informatics in China, especially on the progress of National Specimen Information Infrastructure of China (NSII). Meanwhile, he also promotes the research progress based on Chinese Forest Biodiversity Monitoring Network (CForBio) and Forest Biodiversity-Ecosystem Functioning experiment in China (BEF-China), and actively involves in the research about community assembly rules and biodiversity science. 

XU Jianchu, Professor at Kunming Institute of Botany, CAS; Editorial Board member of Integrative Conservation; Selected as Clarivate’s ‘Highly Cited Researchers 2022’. Major research interests are the ethnoecology and human dimensions of global environmental change, including community-based conservation, land use/cover change, climate change impacts, and forest transitions and their implications for environmental service provision in mountain regions. 

Priya Davidar, Professor (Retired), Pondicherry University, Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (FAAAS), former President of the Association for Tropical Biology and Conservation, is the first female professor of ecology in India. She has published over 100 papers in scientific journals and has guided dozens of post-graduate students in the field of ecology and conservation. Her main research interests are South Asian biodiversity and conservation, biogeography, and pollination ecology.  

About the Moderator 

Harald Schneider, Professor and Principal Investigator of Macroevolution Group of Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden, CAS. He studies questions concerning the macro- and microevolution of land plants integrating phylogenetis and population genetics morphological and molecular evidence, extant and extinct taxa, biogeographic and ecological patterns, divergence time estimates. He currently focuses on studies of Evolutionary Geobiology of Land Plants and Integrative Plant Taxonomy.
