Advanced Fieldcourse in Ecology and Conservation – XTBG, China 2022

AFEC-X 2022 will be organized onsite and online simultaneously.
Applicants currently physically in China can apply for onsite or online study; while applicants currently physically in other countries can only apply for online study. 

Training dates: 17 Oct – 27 Nov 2022 (6 weeks) 

Offline Venue:  Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province, China

Course fee: No course fee will be charged 

Transportation fee: the costs of the journey to and fro between participant’s departure city and XTBG are self-care.

Food and hotel fee: the course organiser will arrange food and hotel and cover part the costs for all onsite full-time study participants. Onsite full-time study participants need to pay part of the costs of hotel (2500 RMB/person) and/or food (2500 RMB/person).

Scholarships: the course organizer have some budget for scholarships (see the application form for details) to cover the food and hotel, which will be awarded based on both merit and financial need. This is only for onsite full-time study participants.

Training certificate: we will offer 2 kinds of study positions which are full-time study and part-time study. You can choose either of them according to your time and interest. (1) Full-time study requires you to participate in the whole process of 6-week study and complete independent project ( you will have the chance to get the training certificate). (2) Part-time study does not require you to participate in the whole process of 6-week study and complete independent project. You can choose courses that you are interested in (you will not get a training certificate, but a certificate of attendance).

Course credits: AFEC-X has obtained accreditation from the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS). Graduate students from UCAS and institutions affiliated to Chinese Academy of Sciences will receive 5 course credits towards their degree program upon completion of the AFEC-X full-time study. Other participants may be able to arrange recognition of these credits by their home institutions.

About: This program is an intensive course in academic skills and research methods, including literature searching, reading, PPT making and presenting skills, scientific paper writing, research design, sampling and data analysis, intended primarily for early-stage graduate students in Ecology and Conservation. A typical day will include lectures, practical work in the field or laboratory, and opportunities for informal discussion. Participants will take part in established long term field monitoring experiments and gain experience in independent project design. With guidance, participants will develop and present research proposals and conduct field-based data collection. The statistical program R will be introduced and used for the data analysis throughout the course. The course concludes with a symposium, where participants present results of course activities amongst their peers and instructors. The course is based mainly at XTBG, with excursions organized to different field sites in the region. During the training course participants are encouraged to approach the XTBG professors to discuss their current research and future plans.

Topics: Tropical Environments, Biodiversity Science, Conservation Biology,  Plant-Animal Interactions, Molecular Ecology, Open Sciences, Animal movement modelling, Experimental Design and R Statistics, Presentation and Writing Skills, etc..
